“Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”—Matthew 19:26
Gifts—we all love to give and receive them. But what happens when you receive something so out-of-the ordinary that you struggle to find the meaning and purpose in it? Why would someone give you this super unusual thing? How can this work for me? What happens when the gift was not as straightforward as you expected? Logic runs our everyday lives. We live and make decisions according to what is rational and understandable. We abide in the things that make sense and are tangible. As believers, we must learn to open the gift of the uncommon. Maybe that gift was intentionally given to you to shift your perspective. What if that strange gift was the very thing God is using to help you? God uses the most unusual circumstances to connect the pieces together in our lives. The uncommon coordinates with the evidence of God’s existence and power. Do not overlook what may seem unconventional. In unusual situations, we can see the Sovereignty of God at work. He will use what is available in your surroundings to get your attention. Did you know the Lord used a donkey that a man named Balaam was riding on to speak to him? Though uncommon, it ultimately brought Balaam to repentance. Jesus fed the five thousand with only five loaves of bread and two fish. Though uncommon, everyone was fed—and there were even leftovers. God used a burning bush to speak to Moses. Though uncommon, those words marked the start of Moses’ ministry in leading the Israelites. God will use everyday things in unexpected ways to reveal His glory.
As we uncover the uncommon, we can find the Father’s Hand perfecting His purpose in us. He opens our eyes to see possibilities where there would be none. He gives us hope that would otherwise be unimaginable. In Genesis 21, Sarah is the ultimate example of the uncommon; she conceives and births a son at the age of ninety. In the natural, this would be absolutely absurd and very much impossible; but in the supernatural God is not limited or moved by the laws and circumstances of this earth. He is the Creator of the universe, so why would God limit Himself while showing us the impossible? God kept His promise. Though it did not happen as they expected—it happened according to His will. We can miss the purpose of the gift looking for the reason of the gift. You can miss your answered prayer by focusing on the unsuspected presentation of it. God’s miracles are produced from the uncommon gifts of life. God does not waste anything, so He will not pass up a unique opportunity to make Himself known to you. The gift may not be wrapped in a neat bow of your expectations, but it is God’s perfect gift to you.
