The words we speak to others and our ourselves matter. Our words can be used for confirming, understanding, explaining and expressing our thoughts. Words have the power to inform and influence the world around us. God spoke many things into being. His words had influence over those who followed Him. The words we use pull us closer to God or further away. Our words can manifest as hazardous or helpful. The same power from Jesus lies within us to speak life. Our speech should reflect the joy and compassion of Christ. We must be mindful of what stems from our tongues. As we grow in the Holy Spirit, our language starts to shift to match the word of God. God has given us vocabulary from the Bible for us to speak words of wisdom and truth. He has given us a guide on how we can positively affect those around us with the comfort and reflection of His love through our words. The words we use—whether inadvertently or intentionally—can be used by the enemy to provoke or prompt destruction. We must remain mindful that our words are either adding value or causing harmful consequences to others and ourselves.
You probably have not realized that you are living out at least one thing that you have spoken—whether it has negatively or positively impacted you. Something that you have given the power of words has become a reality. As a young child, you probably spoke about the possibilities of what you wanted to be as you got older. You probably have encountered some of those things actualized. Maybe you are repeating things into the atmosphere because you have seen it happen over and over. You can break the chains of what you see by changing what you are saying. Things may not be physically changing, but you can speak about the change that is happening in the atmosphere. Your words have power. Have you notice how our bodies, minds and spirits respond when we speak positive things versus negative? Your brain catches up to the narrative that you are not enough, because you repeat it often. Your body catches up to the narrative of constant pain, because you dwell upon it regularly. Your spirit catches up to the narrative of feeling forgotten in what you are going through, because you speak as if you are alone. Shift your language. Shift the narrative. You will see the goodness of God in your life. You will experience an unspeakable joy. You will get through this hard season. Speak life—even if it is the opposite of what you are seeing. His words of wisdom are within you always. The power of your tongue leads to life or destruction—choose the language of life that God has given you.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” -Proverbs 18:21
